UKFPO announces oversubscription plan

Published: 30/11/2010

The UK Foundation Programme Office (UKFPO) has confirmed that there are more applicants to the Foundation Programme starting in August 2011 than vacancies currently available. They have also confirmed that all eligible applicants are expected to be placed in Foundation Programmes - nearly 98% of students will be allocated during December and the remainder over the coming months.

The contingency plan for oversubscription will now be implemented. This means that all applications will be ranked in score order and the 7,073 top-scoring applicants will be placed on the primary list, to be allocated to the 7,073 vacancies available on 8 December 2010.

The remaining 184 applicants will be placed on the reserve list and will be allocated to foundation schools at a later date.

Professor Derek Gallen, UKFPO National Director, said:

“I am confident that all eligible applicants will be placed by next summer, with many being placed by the end of March. Looking at last year’s figures, 400 applicants withdrew between allocation in December and the start of the Foundation Programme in August.

"Although we are pleased that nearly 98% of students will be allocated during December, we appreciate that this is a time of uncertainty for those who will not know what foundation school they are going to for another few months.

"We have been working with medical schools, foundation schools, medical student representatives and the UK health departments to ensure that students on the reserve list are supported and well-informed of the progress of their application.”

Both primary and reserve list applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application on 8 December 2010.
