UK Foundation Programme Office Launched

Published: 25/07/2007

It was announced today that the four UK health departments have established the UK Foundation Programme Office (UKFPO).

The UKFPO has been commissioned to develop Foundation Programme training and assessment, promote best practice and continue to develop a robust recruitment system for foundation doctors across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Professor Derek Gallen, National Director of the UKFPO and Postgraduate Dean for Wales said “The establishment of this office marks an important transition where the Foundation Programme changes from being run by a project team in each country to being maintained, developed and administered by a single UK office.

“We have recently published updated versions of the Foundation Programme Curriculum and the Rough Guide to the Foundation Programme which can be downloaded from our new website. We are just about to publish the revised Operational Framework for Foundation Training and new Foundation Learning Portfolio. All of the revisions are based on extensive stakeholder consultation and feedback.”

There are a great many people who have helped make the Foundation Programme a success and we will continue to work with them to share ideas and ensure consistency of approach  to foundation training across the UK. We are grateful for the feedback from the medical students, foundation doctors, foundation school directors and managers and all others involved in our stakeholder groups.”

The UK Foundation Programme Office will drive forward new developments in foundation training to produce high quality doctors who deliver safe, patient-centred care. It will provide a central information point for medical schools, foundation schools, foundation trainees and the faculty involved in foundation training.
