Published: 04/10/2007

Dear Colleague,

Tim and I have recently been appointed as medical student advisors to the UK Foundation Programme Office. We are looking to get more involvement by medical students and are keen to keep you informed of new developments. Therefore, we present this latest issue of the UKFPO e-update to talk about issues affecting medical students.

We hope you enjoy it!

Matt Mak, Imperial College London
Tim Killeen, Leeds University

This week’s update includes:

  • Medical school representative recruitment
  • UKFPO at BMJ Careers Fair
  • A reminder about registration
  • Medical Student Forum
  • Foundation Applicants Handbook
  • Dates to remember

Calling all medical students

The UK Foundation Programme Office is looking for final year reps from all UK medical schools to be a part of the UKFPO Medical Student Board. Initially set up last year as the MMC England Medical Student Board, this year we aim to recruit representatives from all UK medical schools. The Medical Student Board will be the forum where final year students from across the nation will be able to meet each other to discuss issue relating to the Foundation Programme and the application process. There will be at least two meetings of the Medical Student Board with the first one planned for the 31 October. We hope that as many representatives will be able to attend in order that information may be relayed back to medical students and universities. If you are interested in becoming the representative for your medical school on the Medical Student Board, and you know that there is not currently a representative elected from your school, please contact your medical school secretary who will be able to help you with your enquiry.

BMJ Careers Fair

A reminder that Professor Derek Gallen, National Director, UKFPO, is scheduled to speak at the National BMJ Careers Fair on Saturday, 6 October from 12:15 13:15. The talk will give an overview of the Foundation Programme application process and practical advice on completing the application form. There will also be a Q&A panel which will include Carrie Moore, primary author of the Foundation Applicant’s Handbook, and Dr Scott Oliver, Foundation Doctor Advisor.

There will also be an exhibition stand at the event and UKFPO staff available to answer queries. Please drop in and say hello if you are in the area, and want more advice on this year’s process.

Registration

All medical students eligible for a UK Foundation Programme will soon be receiving details about registration from their registered medical schools, along with details regarding their quartiles. Registration will be open from the 29 of October so please keep these details safe. Once applicants have registered on the website, the system will then send an e-mail confirming the registration. Whilst you will have the option to change your e-mail address, we strongly recommend that you continue to use your university account. You will also then be able to view details of all Foundation Schools across the country.

Medical student forum

Final testing is now taking place on the Medical Student Forum on the UKFPO website. Soon, applicants will be able to register on the forums to discuss any and all issues relating to the Foundation Programme or the application process. The estimated launch date for the forum is no later than the 15 October.

Foundation Applicant’s Handbook

Dont forget that on 8 October, the Foundation Applicant’s Handbook will be released alongside the questions for this years application form. Be sure to read the guide thoroughly for comprehensive guidance on filling in the form, with specific advice on each section.
