Professor Derek Gallen, National Director of the UK Foundation Programme Office (UKFPO) and Postgraduate Dean for Wales, announced today that 7,089 applicants were successfully allocated to foundation schools, with nearly 92% getting into one of their top five schools.
As previously announced, the Foundation Programme beginning in August 2012 had more applicants than available vacancies. Almost 99% of applicants have been allocated to a foundation school with just over 1% on the reserve list pending allocation over the coming months.
Professor Gallen said:
“As we anticipated, due to the change in the allocation algorithm applicant behaviour changed this year, resulting in one London school being selected as the first choice for significantly more applicants than last year. I am delighted to announce nonetheless that nearly three out of four applicants were allocated to their first choice foundation school. We acknowledge that there is still work to do over the coming months to support those on the reserve list and ensure they are allocated as soon as possible. The UKFPO and the foundation schools have worked hard to make this process go smoothly, particularly in light of oversubscription again this year.
However, there is no room for complacency and we will continue to improve the process in response to feedback from students and other stakeholders.”
