Over 90% of Applicants Get First Choice Foundation School
Professor Derek Gallen announced today that 92.4% of eligible applicants to the 2008 Foundation Programme will be allocated to their first choice foundation school.
"Today, nearly 7,000 applicants will be allocated to a foundation school. Over 6,450 of them will get a place in the foundation school that they ranked as their first choice. The UK Foundation Programme Office has put a great amount of effort to make this process go well, and I am delighted with the outcome. The stakeholders have given us invaluable input and a lot of hard work has gone into making this process smoother and better than ever before," said Professor Gallen.
"There were some particularly popular areas which were oversubscribed, with applications numbering almost 2:1 in one London foundation school. However, this has always been the case. The London area produces about twice as many medical school graduates as they have Foundation Programmes, so it is inevitable that they would receive the most applications."
Applicants who were not eligible for matching in the first round due to requiring a work permit will be allocated to any remaining vacancies in February.
The next step is for successful applicants to rank the programmes within their school. The foundation school will then match them to programmes locally. Applicants will be informed of their allocation to programmes by 20 February 2008.
