UKFPO and GMC position on supervision in Public Health placements
As you may be aware, the ‘FP Reference Guide (2012)’ (as approved by the GMC) states that both educational and clinical supervisors must be ‘registered and licensed medical practitioners’.
The UKFPO has recently received several queries from foundation schools regarding the requirements for supervisors in Public Health placements. In view of these queries, the UKFPO and GMC acknowledge that it may not always be possible to appoint a registered and licensed medical practitioner to undertake the role of Clinical Supervisor, for a specific Public Health placement.
The UKFPO and GMC therefore accept that non-medics, with suitable training and experience, are permitted to act as Clinical supervisors for the duration of the Public Health placement only.
It remains the case, that all educational supervisors are expected to meet the ‘FP Reference Guide (2012)’ framework i.e.:
“An educational supervisor is a registered and licensed medical practitioner who is selected and appropriately trained to be responsible for the overall supervision and management of a specified foundation doctor’s educational progress during a training placement or series of placements.”
This clarification will be incorporated into the next edition of the FP Reference Guide in 2016.
